Book Description: The story tells of two friends, Beth and Joey, who are befriended by people from another planet. They are taken inside a mountain where the aliens have made a temporary home. They have exciting adventures and make many friends.
Beth and Joey lived in Mountainside Street in small terraced houses with back gardens facing a huge dome-like mountain. They both attended the village school about a mile away from their home. Beth was a rather serious girl, Joey, very mischievous.
One day they were walking home from school, when they arrived at the beginning of the street they usually paused and chatted. In the garden was a scarecrow. Beth and Joey named the scarecrow Mr. Jolly because he had a happy face.
Mr. Jolly had been in the garden ever since they could remember and always appeared to be looking intently at the mountain. The children were chatting happily away, when, suddenly, Joey noticed that Mr. Jolly's arm had moved forward and his hand appeared to be pointing towards the mountain.
They looked over at the mountain. In the centre of the mountain there was a huge crater-like gap overgrown with grass, heather and ferns. It had always been there since they could remember but today it looked different somehow.
Beth and Joey told their mothers they were going to play on the mountain which was quite usual. They took George, Joey's Labrador dog with them. George loved running, jumping and playing on the mountain. They walked across the bridge over the river and then upwards towards the crater.
When the children reached the crater they called George and fastened the lead to his collar. 'Do you think we only imagined we saw a light Beth?' asked Joey.
'Of course not' said Beth. 'We couldn't both imagine it at the same time. Be very quiet; something might happen,' and it did...
